Life won’t slow down, but you can.

It’s easy to come into March is if you’ve just slid down a chute, that you unwittingly got in just before Thanksgiving, and didn’t realize would keep you in its confines for the next few months. Holidays can be a wonderful and less-wonderful sort of stress. January is a great time to organize, but even that can add pressures in your life. Before you know it, it’s March. You’re still wiped out for the holidays, the honeymoon phase of your resolutions is petering out, and it’s too early for summer vacation. Now what? The demands on your time are still there. Life won’t slow down, but you can.

It’s time for a break! The anticipation of every student around the country is almost palpable. It’s time for Spring Break! This may have stopped applying to you years ago, or maybe not. Well, this March, either way, it’s time to reclaim it.

Take a week and get a change of scenery. If you can’t take a week, try for a weekend. What excellent places are just a few hours drive from your home and work? Get in the car, get some goodies, and go on a mini road trip down Highway 61.

If those options aren’t available to you, what about one day? Take a day to hike at Taylors Falls, go to a restaurant you’ve always wanted to try, meet up with a friend, or find a new ski hill.

If one day is too much for you, then within your day take micro-spring breaks. Introverted? Take a bath, read a book, or revisit an 80’s movie. Extroverted? Go out for dessert with a friend or even connect with a counselor if you need to unload. Take an hour or two just for you.

Whatever you do, let it be a time of refreshing. Don’t add pressure to something that should be easing off your shoulders. Take a break before you break. You’ve just been let off of chute and before you jump on another one, slow down, take a deep breath, and enjoy the moment.
