Look Up – You Might Be Surprised
You started the new year off right. You’re rockin’ your resolutions and becoming a better version of yourself. You’ve created better habits and given up bad ones. Change looks good on you.
The great thing about change is that it doesn’t happen in a vacuum. Change starts personally and is refined relationally. Better relationships begin with you. You’ve committed to a better year and now let’s commit to a better “us.”
Take this personal challenge to try and improve your relationships with family and friends to emphasize this point: Look up.
This call to action is simple. It is also simply difficult, as our eyes are of the habit of looking down, rather than up. We check our phone for the time and twenty minutes later we stumble out of blurred binge of Instagram, Facebook, and seven videos of cats doing weird things, yet with no recollection of actually seeing what time it was. And so we look again. If we’re not careful, we can sink into that world, addicted to what we hold in the palms of our hands, while the life around us whirs by.
Look up. Don’t miss the precious irretrievable moments in favor of those that will be locked forever in data history on your phone. Make eye contact. Remember what someone looks like while they tell a story. Read the face of your friend who’s struggling to tell you something sad, vulnerable, or even a little boring. Do more than a nod and reply with, “Huh. That’s great,” to your child without having seen the light of eager excitement and joy in their eyes. Take part in the wonder.
Look up. You might be surprised by what you see. You might make new friends or hear a new story from old ones. You might see your family in a fresh way or even discover your relationships need a little more help than you realized, which is exactly why we’re here for you.
Looking at the people in your life naturally leads to being more engaged, and that builds communication and relationship. Be present in the now, and from that investment in those you care about, they will continue to desire engagement with you in the future.
