Trauma Focused Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (TF-CBT)
Trauma-Focused Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (TF-CBT) is a form of psychotherapy for children and adolescents between the ages of 3-18, who have experienced trauma or abuse. It can be successful in the short term, helping with many different conditions stemming from emotional traumatic life events. Trauma-based therapy is based on exposing the child in small, tolerable doses to the memory of the trauma, only after helping the child develop skills to help them better manage thoughts and feelings associated with the trauma.
How can TF-CBT help my child?
Trauma-Focused Cognitive Behavioral Therapy can treat a wide variety of trauma-related issues such as PTSD, anxiety, externalizing behavior, depression, and feelings of mistrust or shame. It can also help children experiencing grief after a traumatic loss. The therapy program is designed to help children, adolescents, and their caretakers deal with negative responses after traumatic events or childhood sexual abuse. TF-CBT can also help parents understand what their children are going through, and can help them learn how to help their child.
How effective is TF-CBT?
TF-CBT has been proven to significantly help children with PTSD and other emotional traumas in as little as 12 to 16 weeks of treatment. Psychological studies have proven improved coping with emotions, fewer intrusive thoughts, and reductions in depression, anxiety, behavioral problems, shame, and disassociation. TF-CBT also significantly helps the parents’ ability to support their child.
